    About MITBCA | Since the debut of the Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Conference & Awards in 2012 which rewarded some of the world’s most accomplished Travel-Social Media Bloggers, MITBCA 2013 is set to spin this year’s event with a more exciting approach, leaving others to admire and emulate upon.

    Malaysia has set its pace to be on the forefront of reach into social media. Undeniably, there is a definitive difference between monitoring our brand in social media and using traditional methodologies in reaching out to build on tourism numbers. Travel is certainly a very hot topic across all social media channels and is one of the top three online topics of discussion and engagement. It surely encourages new network build up, new clientele bases and new innovative ideas being put across.

    Such rapid movement of social media in travel and leisure industry was the basis of the conceptualization of the Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Conference & Awards 2013 (MITBCA2013), organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia. The Awards aim to encourage and honour the tourism bloggers across the globe for extensively promoting Tourism in Malaysia. After the nominations, voting and campaigning processes, the finale would be in Kuala Lumpur on 5th – 6th March 2013 and the nation will honour the best of the best in social media tourism.

    Awards | The Tourism Bloggers Awards are designed for Individuals, Travel & Tourism companies and Organizations related to tourism to highlight their achievement in the social media space with respect to tourism. International blogger nominees should be travel bloggers who blog about tourism, tourist spots and also share Malaysia in some way or the other.

    Conclusion of MITBCA 2012 #mitbca2012

    Attending such a big event like MITBCA 2012 was truly an eye-opener on how social media works; the importance of it in relation to tourism and how to get the most out of it.  What made it more interesting, most of the speakers are avid travel bloggers who travel out of passion. Sheila Scarborough (USA), Ali Watters (Scotland), Kiruba Shankar (India),  David Hogan Jr. (Malaysia), Shane Dallas (Australia), Joe Lee @ Klubbkidd (Malaysia), Anuradha Goyal (India), James Craven (UK), Iman Brotoseno (Indonesia), Windy Ariestanty (Indonesia), Michael Aquino (Philippines), Anis Nabilah (Malaysia), Hanie Hidayah (Malaysia) and Dr Mridula Dwivedi (India), Stephen Doss (Malaysia), Khairul Anuar bin Shaharudin @ Kruel74 (Malaysia), Nisha Jha (ndia), Jojo Struys (Malaysia), Shahul Hameed Shaik Dawood (Malaysia)   …they were all fantastic.

    Overall, I think the event was a success. And most importantly, I learned from the best on how to harness the power of social media  reach and impact in tourism. This conference has definitely brought me to a new level in blogging about travel. I met new friends; travel bloggers, travel writers, tourism agencies/operators, national tourism organisation, hotel operators and many more. Helping the Tourism Ministry to achieve it’s target of attracting up to 36 million tourists  to Malaysia by 2020 is now seems all possible.

    Thank you to the Ministry of Tourism, especially to Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen for organising MITBCA 2012. It was a blast and although it was only a two-day conference, I came home a learned and inspired blogger who is now working on narrowing down her niche to art and travel.

    Sheila Scarborough is a writer and speaker specializing in tourism, travel and social media. She has written for many blogs and print publications and is also a certified US Navy Master Training Specialist, with years of experience as an instructor.

    Alistair Watters is the founder and owner of TravelBlog.org – one of the world’s leading travel websites. He founded TravelBlog.org in 2002 and has developed, marketed and run the site ever since. He is an expert on travel, communities, website development and online marketing. In his spare time Ali loves scuba diving and underwater photography. He actually lives in KL for already 3 years now.

    Shane Dallas is a passionate traveller who explores the world to immerse himself in different cultures and experiences. Shane has visited more than 60 countries and territories across five continents, and apart from excursions to regular tourist destinations, he has also journeyed to countries not often frequented by fellow travellers such as Yemen, Syria, Ethiopia and North Korea. Known as “The Travel Camel”, Shane has written several travel articles, and has participated in numerous segments on ABC radio in Australia to discuss holiday destinations and travel related matters.

    David Hogan Jr is the editor, writer and photographer for Malaysia Asia, a very niche travel blog about tourism around Malaysia and Asia in general. Born and bred Malaysian, he has been running this travel site since 2008 and found that there is so much more in his own backyard than what most locals would think there is. Ever since embarking on a journey around Malaysia in general, he has shared his experiences on the site and also on multiple Social Media platforms. David is also the only travel blogger in Malaysia to have his articles featured on the Lonely Planet website since 2009. He has won the prestigious Sabah Tourism Award for Best Online Media in 2011 and has been featured in many other international travel blog sites.

    Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Conference & Awards – The Conference Day 2 #mitbca2012

    Hello, I am blogging live here from MITBCA 2012 Conference; Day 2 (last day).

    The conference today started with Sheila S discusing The Great Equalizer: How the Social Web Helps Any Destination Play in the Big Time. 

    Sheila told about about The Power of One; How Little Guys Win Online. Sheila introduces us delegates to @CodyKS who utilises the social media to promote the town he lives in.  She later discusses about #ScotlandHour, a twitter channel started by Susan Mc Naughton to help promote tourism in Scotland. Later she talks about Liza Pierce @AMauiBlog, a regular person writing a day to day entries about her daily life who loves about the island she lives in, Maui. She is a much seeked go-to person for travel bloggers who wish to visit Maui. Last person we discuss is Doug Anweiler @AuthenticCoast. He promotes Nova Scotia, he puts up great photos of the place and updates of the town. It’s a one man job. Instead of having to say “come and visit”, he says “this is what we have here”.

    The point is the content does not have to be fancy. It can be just you looking out of your window and recording what’s around you in the form of pictures and simple text.

    SESSION FOUR – Measuring return on investing in tourism using social media

    Setting reasonable key performance indicators – the number will show – Dr Mridula Dwivedi (India) – Dr. Mridula  Dwivedi (India) discusses how some national tourism organisations (NTO) are not playing their roles and emphasizes that finding NTO websites was a task itself. Information is buried somewhere within the websites. She is calling all NTOs to take advantage of social media and use it as a platform to promote tourism.

    Trend setters in travel and leisure – how to engage with them – James Craven (UK) – James discusses how NTOs, tourism operators and agencies can engage bloggers to help them promote their tourism businesses. He is talking from his own point of view as Managing Director of Hybrid News Ltd. UK where he engages bloggers to help promote his business. The big point is social media is not free and bloggers need to be paid for their effort in helping to get more online reach.

    Monetizing via social media – where to start and how to grow – Nisha Jha (India) – Nisha discusses about social media being an enabler to help reach targets. Social media is not the answer to all marketing woes and it needs careful planning and diligent execution. Planning includes word of mouth communication, write and invite comments, publicise contents through social media, encourage discussions in forums, initiate contest and sharing of videos/photos. The bottom line is to constantly engage and obtain better SERP (search engine result page) and branding.

    Leveraging on Social Media to Champion a cause – Jojo Struys (Malaysia)   It was fun watching Jojo handles her presentation. She shares a videos that she was involved in. The video was made at no cost at all and instead of getting only 200 students to involve in the awareness campaign, they entices nearly half a million of students to join. Apart from the video, the campaign uses prints, broadcastings as well as online social media to get the words out. Jojo also shared her experience visiting the Borneo rainforest. She concluded that Malaysia has a lot of interesting places to be discovered and hopes that local bloggers will find the time to explore and blog about it and share the experience with the whole world using online social media.

    Open Forum: The Effects of Online Social Media on Tourism Websites Globally

    Panel members: Director – Advertising Division, Tourism Malaysia – Abdul Khani Daud (Malaysia), President, Malaysia Social Media Chambers – Shahul Hameed Shaik Dawood (Malaysia) and Senior official from The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission – SKMM.

    Abdul Khani explains that social media is quite new to the government. Although he thinks that social media is a good tool to promote tourism, it can also have a damaging effect on the industry (referring to the video of how the public of The Philippines posted topics about guns, crimes and the negative issues on social media).

    Shahul discusses how social media helps boost tourism. It was interesting to watch a video of how billions of people around the world turn to social media today. He also shares basic tips on blogging. Things to consider are  timely blog updates, finding niche audience, write about anything but write from personal point of view and get ready for criticism. He also shares tips of the social media don’ts:

    • Never get emotional
    • Never take a comment personally
    • Never keep your page stagnant for a long time
    • Never force people to like your page or follow you
    • Never follow people just for the sake of following
    • Avoid having errors when writing on the wall or tweeting
    • Promote with all the positives you have, don’t highlight negatives of others to prove you are better.

    It’s 1.14pm here and all the delegates are hungry. Haha.

    Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Conference & Awards – The Conference #mitbca2012

    I have never been to any bloggers conference and when I got to know about this tourism conference, I jumped at the chance and registered. When I reached the registration area of MITBCA‘s conference at Seri Pacific’s Grand Ballroom, I did not see any familiar faces. Shemah and Bella could not make it the first day but lucky I made friend with Fid Abdullah. Upon entering the the Grand Ballroom, I saw Fariz Luqman, my niece‘s schoolmate. Later I saw David Hogan Jr from Malaysia Asia and Bro Framestone.

    The Minister of Tourism, Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen came in around 9.40am and greeted everyone in the hall.

    The friendly minister welcomes one of the speakers, James Craven. Seen escorting her is Shahul Hameed Shaik Dawood, the President of Malaysia Social Media Chambers.

    After taking pictures with speakers and officials, she practically continued making her rounds to ensure she covers almost everyone in the hall. How cool is that? And she said hi to me. 😀

    In her keynote speech, Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen stressed that the social media is not free. In order to promote the tourism industry in Malaysia, the goverment spent RM1.8 million only for 6 online campaigns/year and this is not much to compare to Australia who spent $140 million, while The  Philippines $40 million for their tourism campaigns. Despite of having criticism about the budget, the ministry aims to harness the power of social media and blogging to attract up to 36 million tourists  to Malaysia by 2020, from the 24.6 million achieved last year. Social media has become a key tool to promote Malaysia globally and this is what the conference is all about; to discuss the importance and how to get the most out of it.

    Speakers of the first day includes Sheila Scarborough (USA), Ali Watters (Scotland), Kiruba Shankar (India),  David Hogan Jr. (Malaysia), Shane Dallas (Australia), Joe Lee @ Klubbkidd (Malaysia), Anuradha Goyal (India), James Craven (UK), Iman Brotoseno (Indonesia), Windy Ariestanty (Indonesia), Michael Aquino (Philippines), Anis Nabilah (Malaysia) and Hanie Hidayah (Malaysia). Moderators include Dr Mridula Dwivedi (India), Stephen Doss (Malaysia) and Khairul Anuar bin Shaharudin @ Kruel74 (Malaysia).

    All the talks were very inspiring and I had great time listening to all of them. Sheila Scarborough emphasises that travel bloggers connect with other travel bloggers as well as travel operators, tourism agencies, etc via social media ie.e facebook and twitter. The online travel communities are huge and it actually helps boost the tourism industry worldwide.

    Vote for travel bloggers who promote Malaysia #mitbca2012

    We all agree that tourism is the world’s largest industry and growing significantly. And the role and effort that travel bloggers made by blogging their travel experience plays a huge part in the industry. Of course there are travel websites to help promote places of interest all over the world but sometimes traveller will seek first hand information from other travellers mainly those who blog about it.

    Realising this, Tourism Malaysia has created Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Conference and Awards (MITBCA 2012) to honour travel bloggers who promote Malaysia in general. Some 376 blogs have been nominated in 16 categories; with 160 international bloggers (bloggers at travelblog.org) from all over the world participating in the Tourism Travel Blog Category.

    Now you readers, people of the earth, permanent residents of Malaysia, Malaysians, tourists, or anybody who has a Facebook account, you have a task for the weekend or until 1st May 2012.

    What I need you to do is, login with your Facebook account and browse through the categories on the left sidebar. Click on each link to read their blog (I reckon some of them, if not all, have travel category in their blog) and later choose the best blogger that you think deserves the award. You can vote only once for each category.
