    Moleskine cum IF challenge

Penang Island | Mixed media on Moleskine

The IF challenge this week is to illustrate ‘Island’. The only thing that I could think of is Penang Island. Of course there’s Langkawi Island, Pangkor Island and what not but Penang Island always comes to mind first. Furthermore, my late grandma was a Penangite. I wish I could add more elements like landmark icons but it would be too small for me to draw, so I just settled with the Penang Bridge intead. Of course Plumerias too.

The last time I went there was like 8 years ago and I really enjoyed it’s beautiful beaches, the view from the bridge and the antique buildings. I even painted one for my wall. A blogger friend, Dmystify, a Penangite, has pictures of beautiful buildings in his Grand Ol’ Penang post. Check it out and don’t forget to leave a comment, or two, in his blog, ok!

My moleskine; 56 pages left. Overall coloring: Acrylic, outline: micron pen, shadow: prismacolor colored pencils.

Are you a penangite? I would love to link you in here. Let me know, I’ll put up a link love to your blog!

    Moleskine challenge: Leaf study

Leaf study | mixed media on Moleskine

58 pages left. While watching my son playing in his plastic swimming pool, I sat down on a stool studying these leaves. I went inside and took my moleskine and start sketching directly. Continued with the coloring after break fasting. I used watercolor for overall coloring and prismacolor to enhance the shadow.

    Clutter – IF

Clutter | Mixed Media on Moleskine

The theme is ‘Clutter’ over at Illustration Friday. I have clutter in my home and this is just a part of it. I found a great article on how to Keep Your Home Clutter-Free written by Emily in Simple Mom’s website. I enjoyed reading it and I think it’s time for me to get organized.

P/s: This drawing doubles as my own Moleskine Challenge. 60 pages left.

    Moleskine Challenge: Flower ornaments

Flower ornaments | mixed media on moleskine

62 pages left! Used dark umber colored pencil for the background and pigment ink for the drawing. I wanted to use this design for my curtains but have to think about it again as I’ve had it with photo emulsion silkscreen. I just can’t get it right and the last time I did, I’ve wasted 3 screens! Call me an old school but I think it was a whole lot easier back then (SPM 1986) using just varnish to create a stencil out of the screen. It was a very very hard work but I enjoyed the process.

Oh well, might just buy curtain fabrics from IKEA.

    Moleskine Challenge: Merbah

Merbah | Mixed media on moleskine

63 pages left! Used Prismacolor colored pencils for the foreground and oil pastel for the background. I didn’t really like the thick pastel effect on this one so I wiped it off with tissue to achieve a very thin layer.

This specific Merbah (bulbul) is of the Yellow-vented species.

    Sail – IF

Paperboat | Mixed media on Moleskine

The challenge this week at IllustrationFriday.com is “Sail”. I practically tore a piece of paper from my organiser and made a paperboat. Took a pail full of water and put the paperboat in. It was fun watching them moved in circle. Drawing it was fun too though my pail and water were not as real ;P

When I was a kid, paperboat was a great toy to play in the rain. Made tons of paperboats and let them sailed away in a drain one after another. Yup, tore down the whole of my math exercise book. Hated math!

Mixed media: Oil pastels, prismacolors and graphite.
