    Google Doodle: Mark Twain

    Mark Twain Google Doodle

    Credits: Google Doodle, google.com

    I really love seeing the banner across Google today in conjunction with Mark Twain’s 176th birthday. It’s a beautiful drawing depicting a scene in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (written in 1876) where the character of Tom Sawyer cleverly persuades his friends to trade him small treasures for the privilege of painting a fence, that Tom was asked to do as a punishment.

    The Doodle’s style may refer to the original Twain illustrator, True Williams.

    Beware of fraud paypal site

    Whenever I received messages saying that my PayPal has a problem, I will always check the link by rolling the mouse over the link. I never click on other links when it comes to PayPal. PayPal equals money, so I am extra careful.

    PayPal correct link is:
    International: http://paypal.com/
    Malaysia: http://www.paypal.com/my

    In the case of the phishing site, the link has dot net extension; http://paypal.net.

    Here’s the message that they sent, look convincing but it’s not from the real PayPal. If they ask you to download the form and fill in, DO NOT. Instead, report the site to Paypal.

    Dear PayPal account holder,

    PayPal is constantly working to ensure security by regularly screening the accounts in our system. We have recently determined that different computers have tried logging into your PayPal account,and multiple password failures were present before the logons. Until we can collect secure information, your access to sensitive account features will be limited. We would like to restore your access as soon as possible, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

    Download and fill out the form to resolve the problem and then log into your account.

    Thanks ,
    PayPal

    PSD to HTML

    For website designers, PSD-to-HTML is very familiar. Last time I used this process to create unique website for the company I was working with. I created and designed layouts from scratch in PSD, slice  them and write HTML out of it. This process is widely used in Web Development process to cater those who wants a unique website. For example, if you want your working desktop (with pencils, erasers, pen, folder, etc) photo as the front page of your website and later link the items to certain page, this is the process that you have to undergo.

    Now, if you want to turn your unique concept into a great website, you gotta hire the real PSD to HTML experts to do it for you. Better still, you can hire CodeMyConcept, the fastest growing and best PSD to HTML service on the planet. They take your designs (or even rough idea sketches) and turn them into beautiful hand-coded and W3C standard compliant websites. CodeMyConcept offers unbeatable pricing and they are insanely very fast in delivering their work too. Although their pricing is amazingly low and the delivery is fast, please don’t think the quality reflects that. They have the best quality markup on the web at par with those big web design companies.

    Don’t believe? Go find out, submit them a project.

    Using fancy font for your post title

    Hallo! Wie geht es dir?  Been busy with work without realising it has been two days! I have been doing a blog makeover yesterday and completed book illo #8 previously. Now doing illo #9.

    Anyway, let’s get geeky today. Do you want to put a fancy font to your wordpress blog? If you are a proud self-hosted wordpress blogger, good. Here’s how:

    1. Download this plugin: Ultimate Google Fonts.Ultimate Google Font

    2. Unzip and upload the plugin to your wp-content\plugins directory.

    3. Activate the plugin.

    4. Go to Settings and look for Ultimate Google Fonts. Click.

    5. Choose your fonts. Check the radio box and Save Changes.

    6. Type in your CSS code in the CSS box and Save Changes.

    7. Voila! You have a new font.

    Example of the code, can be like below:

    .post h2 a{
    font-family:'thefontname',serif;
    color: #333333;
    size: 30px;
    }

    Change the size and color value to suit your liking. The font-family code is located at the end of the font you chose, you can just copy and paste in the CSS box.

    For blogspot blogger:

    1. Check Google web fonts

    2. Choose the font you like.

    Copyright of images found on the Internet

    This issue has been going on forever and many people are not aware about copyright or do not really understand the meaning of Copyright. Or do not understand the meaning at all.

    According to Encarta Dictionary:

    copyright [ kóppi r?t ] – creative artist’s control of original work: the legal right of creative artists or publishers to control the use and reproduction of their original works.

    Basically, copyright automatically protects images found on websites. Artists do not have to register their works in order to protect them and a copyright symbol or notice does not have to be included with an image in order for it to be protected.

    don't play play, ok

    While browsing the Internet looking for reading material, I found this great article by Brad Templeton, 10 Big Myths about Copyright Explained.

    Here are some myths that I copied that I thought relevant to my context:

    1) If it doesn’t have a copyright notice, it’s not copyrighted. The default you should assume for other people’s works is that they are copyrighted and may not be copied unless you know otherwise. There are some old works that lost protection without notice, but frankly you should not risk it unless you know for sure. It is true that a notice strengthens the protection, by warning people, and by allowing one to get more and different damages, but it is not necessary. If it looks copyrighted, you should assume it is. This applies to pictures, too. You may not scan pictures from magazines and post them to the net, and if you come upon something unknown, you shouldn’t post that either.

    2) If you don’t charge for it, it’s not a violation. False. Whether you charge can affect the damages awarded in court, but that’s main difference under the law. It’s still a violation if you give it away — and there can still be serious damages if you hurt the commercial value of the property.

    3) If it’s posted to Internet, it’s in the public domain. False. Nothing modern and creative is in the public domain anymore unless the owner explicitly puts it in the public domain(*). Explicitly, as in you have a note from the author/owner saying, “I grant this to the public domain.” Those exact words or words very much like them.

    9) It doesn’t hurt anybody — in fact it’s free advertising. It’s up to the owner to decide if they want the free ads or not. If they want them, they will be sure to contact you. Don’t rationalize whether it hurts the owner or not, ask them. Usually that’s not too hard to do.

    Loading time

    My blog was so heavy last time and loading it was like forever. I was kinda tired of it and so I went searching ways on how to optimise loading time. Thanks to the internet technology, I found SEO Doctor and installed the browser add-on. From there I studied the tips on how to make loading time faster.

    Here are the things that I learned and want to share with you:

    Plugins and widgets are usually the prime suspect for slowdowns. With so many plugins and widgets around, chance is you might have installed more than you need. Try to reduce by deleting not-so-important ones.

    Images, flash, videos and javascripts all which take a significant portion of bandwidth. It is often overlooked that your images can be optimized (made smaller) which can significantly reduce loading times. Good way to avoid this problem is to compress images.

    Themes can include code with plugin capabilities and may use excessive JavaScript or image files, causing huge amount of data to transfer. Try looking for simpler theme.

    Post Revision might cause the slow loading. If you are using wordpress like me, you should now by now that under the edit mode, there’s a post revision tracking mechanism. If you don’t really need it, you can take it out by adding define('WP_POST_REVISIONS', false); in your wpconfig file. You can also look for Database Optimisation plugin.

    Number of posts in homepage can also be the cause. If you have many images on your posts, try reducing to a minimum of 5 posts. Else, 10 is just fine.

    Now my blog loads less than 10 seconds, much much much better than the more-than-100 seconds previously. If your blog loads too slow, you should really start applying the above methods but I am very sure that there are hundreds of thousands of tips from SEO Experts on how to solve the loading problem. You just go google ‘optimise loading time’. Good luck!
