    Magic Mirror Exhibition *

The opening ceremony of Magic Mirror Exhibition yesterday at Kerinchi Foyer, Wisma UOA, Jalan Pantai Jaya went smoothly and the event was launched by Encik Yusof Gajah, a famous illustrator and painter who is well known for his elephant paintings as well as his Tiga Ekor Gajah children’s book. He has won the 1997 Grand Prix award at Noma Concours for Children’s Picture Book Illustration in Japan. In his speech, Encik Yusof said that unlike children’s books, new babies are born every seconds every day locally and it is the duty of local writers and illustrators to come up with more children’s books to make sure that our children will have good reading material to grow up with. He also expressed his hope to see that special art studio facilities being set up in schools to encourage future young illustrators. Others who attended the event were Mr Justin Tan, CEO of Extol MSC Berhad, Linda Tan Lingard, SCBWI Regional Advisor, Mr Peter Worthington, children’s books writer of Animal Adventure Series (all the books were illustrated by Nur Azmi), all illustrators involved, publishers as well as representatives from Children’s Homes. In the event, representatives from Oyez Books, Kohwai & Young, Arus Intelect and Edition Plus have generously donated books to St. Barnabas Children’s Homes and Rumah Anak Yatim Hajjah Kamariah.

I finally met Ken Ong and Yoon See at the Magic Mirror Exhibition’s yesterday. Beside them, Kak Farihah, Dilla and Iwan also attended the event. My best buddy Daliza was stucked in a meeting and could not make it earlier. By the time she messaged me and was on her way, I was already on my way home. Thank you so much Daliza for the effort and I love, love, love you for that. Marzie, my online and also offline best buddy, also could not make it but she has done a very big favor by translating Magic Mirror in the news for me! Thank you so much Marzie, I love you as much as I love Daliza itu!

Extol MSC Berhad appreciates local artists

KUALA LUMPUR –As sponsor of the Charity Art Exhibition organised by the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI), Extol MSC Berhad will be displaying a wide array of artworks at Kerinchi Foyer,  Wisma UOA Pantai beginning Thursday.

According to Justin Tan, Chief Executive officer of Extol MSC Berhad, the Kerinchi Foyer was formerly used to place security solutions offered by the company to its visitors.
However, due to sufficient space and his appreciation for local talents, he has decided to turn this space into a location for artwork display.

The exhibition will also showcase handicrafts, sketches and computer illustrations.

“As illustrators, these artists design their own drawings and graphics, depicting their creativity into a story or idea, which visitors can now enjoy at the exhibition.

“The objective of this charity art exhibition is to feature the talents of artists and diagram illustrators as well as to introduce children’s books artwork in order to encourage the production of high-quality local children’s books,” he continued.

Proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to selected charity homes and allocated for open source software development programmes for the community by Extol.

“We are making a humble request for book donations from local and international publishers to be given away to selected children’s charity homes. This exhibition will also pave way for local talents to shine in the public eye,” he concluded.

Artists to be featured in the exhibition include Sarah Joam Mokhtar, Nur Azmi Mokhtar, Anuar Hassan or fondly known as Sireh, Nor Emila Mohd Yusof and Mischele Mariam Nazmi.
Throughout the exhibition, several workshops will be conducted as well namely ‘Open source design tools for designers and artists’, ‘Malaysian children’s book publishing outlook’, ‘Reading aloud and storytelling’, ‘Overview of popular children’s books’, and ‘Copyrights for writers and illustrators’.

Got this newspaper cutting from Linda Tan, Regional Adviser of SCBWI and also the Project Manager for Magic Mirror Exhibition tomorrow. I told my husband about it and he went to the nearest news stand to get a copy of yesterday’s Sinar Tabloid. Luckily there are still few available!

They spelled my name wrongly (Nor Emilia Mohd Yusuf instead of Nor Emila Mohd Yusof) but I guess it’s normal; been having this problem all my life. I am so happy that my illustration has been featured in the news. I wanted to translate this news to English but haven’t have time yet to do so. Let me know if you want to translate it for me, I can credit your name and link to your blog! Translated by Marzie already!

So to all illustration and children’s book lovers out there, be sure to come to the exhibition which will be open tomorrow for a month. I will be there half day tomorrow. Among painters and illustrators involved in the exhibition are Sarah Joan Mokhtar, Mischele Mariam Nazmi, Farhana Mohd Tajalli, Sireh, Nur Azmi Mokhtar and Khairul Azuwan Ishak.
