Coffee sketch – Emila Yusof (Emilatopia)

I had just finished and submitted all 11 pending illos to the book publisher few days ago when a friend, Helmy said on twitter, “let’s go coffee!” I said why not. Another friend, Hadi, was suppose to come but he got stuck in the heavy rain. So while talking about life, work, upcoming projects and what not with Helmy, I drew this with pencil. Coloring was done earlier today. Effect is done by spreading watercolor using fan brush and index finger. To do that, you dip the fan brush in diluted watercolor (not too wet, just enough for the brush to hold the water) and strum over your index finger on the tip of the brush (from bottom to top) to sprinkle it over your drawing. (tak faham, refer to my diagram below lah). If it’s knocked on another brush stick, it’ll make small sprinkles. Try and see!

kak.. bila i buat shadowing pada box atau sphere.. mmg senang tp bila object mcm mug.. bag….hand… rasa nak tarik rambut..

i hate colouring… but i want to learn how to colour..

bila follow tutorial.. ok laa jadi.. bila buat sendiri .. lari gila!

i ingat dulu tahap tak suka mewarna zaman sekolah–darjah 1.. cikgu i marah sb i buat polkadot pada gambar kereta where u were suppose to colour the picture..

hehe the only thing you need to do is PRACTICE. This is the only advise I have, disamping tu, you tengok pada real object or pada gambar, what’s the lighting like. Kak emi suka guna pencil untuk shading sebab senang nak graduate guna jari je. You have to try this many times, never give up.
