    Karnival Tasik 2010

Few months back, my niece, Wanda, told me that there will be a carnival organised by her school in order to raise money for the school funds. She wants me to join in and take a spot. So, I am participating and paid for a spot. And now I am taking my time off until Friday from doing drawings and illustrations. I need to print some of my greeting cards, sew some felt creatures, do some simple original collector’s item cards etc. Frankly, I am quite excited. I have so many things in mind to make but with just two hands, the production is limited. Wanda? She’s not the creative type but she helps around spraying keychains!

My printer failed on me so I did an illustrated poster for Wanda to stick on the school’s notice board.

If you happen to be in the vicinity of Ampang, do drop buy! My niece told me there will be a haunted house! I bet my son would love to see them ‘ghosts’!

Venue: Sekolah Menengah Taman Tasik, Ampang
    Date: 31 July 2010 (Saturday)
    Time: 8am – 3pm

  • ABOUT ME,  digital illos

    Essentially yours

I have been dilly-dallying a big job for quite sometimes already and few days ago I got a reminder to submit at least the covers first. Drawing traditionally, I will take my own sweeeeeeeeeeet time adding details and perfecting the colors. After the scanning process, I will take some more sweeeeeeeeeet time perfecting the drawing by cleaning and neating it. So overall, for a drawing, I will take more than three days. But it will take more days when the mood is not there. Seeing me working like that, my husband suggested that I work smart, drawing digitally using Corel Painter. At first I was a bit reluctant but thinking that I will save more time, I gave in to the idea. And so, I installed Corel Painter Essential 3 that came free with the Wacom tablet I won from Foldees.com.

So, after spending a day getting acquainted with Essential, I start on the first drawing of the book covers. So far so good, but essentially, this Essential version is quite limited. But that’s okay I guess, long as there’s a brush tool and a color palette; the two most essential tools, I think I can live essentially with the Essential version.

    Tutorial: 003 Basic Shading

The idiom “practice makes perfect” is the act of rehearsing a behavior again and again for the purpose of improving or mastering it. So the idiom applies perfectly to drawing and painting too. The more you draw, the better you are. Good thing about drawing is that you can draw anywhere. While waiting to be served in a restaurant, waiting for the LRT to arrive or any other idle time. I used to scribble in a boring group meeting during my 9 to 5 days. Our sketches are just mere expressions of things linger in our mind at that particular time. It’s often meaningless and incomprehensible to some extent. But who cares, nobody is going to mark your scribble.

This is my typical scribbling while waiting for something. The victim will be my sketchbook, notepad, serviette, white space on tabloid, wrapping package or any other materials identified as paper that belong to me.

Well, the serviette will eventually goes into garbage bin, but believe me the skill stuck with you. I strongly advise you to start this habit but hey…please don’t vandalise. If you really want to practice in respond to emilayusof tutorial, your mind will naturally came up with subjects to draw. Let it be shades of an apple, tall post, orang lidi, whatever it is, just start sketching.

In this tutorial I will talk more on basic shading and tool in use is still pencil and pen but guess what, we are going to practice on more complex object, not just cube or sphere like in the previous tutorial.

And this is what we are going to sketch; a  cup of coffee.

Before we start, lets take a moment to analyze the subject. First, look at the light source. It’s from right and casting a soft shadow to the left. Look at the shade too, (The edge of the cup is bright, the coffee is darker but the outer side of the cup is much less dark because the cup is white….. etc.). Now look at the line and shape that makes the cup. Proportion of shapes to one another. Just memorise the whole scene, so you don’t have to juggle your attention too often.

On your drawing pad, start sketching the most prominent outline. Don’t hesitate to use eraser to redraw the line. At this stage I prefer to use HB pencil which is less contrast.

With darker pencil, start shading the dark area. Well, how much you practice on previous tutorial will obviously be reflected here. The coffee is darker than everything else, so extra pressure on that area. Yes, whatever your eye perceives, make a mental note.

Before you proceed, erase unwanted excessive outline. Add some tone for the background to make your subject outstanding. Smudge with your finger to get smooth effect. Enhance darker area with smoother stroke. When you feel that you have achieved good contrast, smudge with your finger or cotton bud in the area between dark and light to smoothen the tone.

Finally recover the bright area with eraser. You might need to trim your eraser to get finer tips. All the subject involved is reflective in nature. (Spoon edge, coffee surface, cup) Pay extra attention on the reflection and try to get it right. It will certainly make your sketching more realistic.

    Two important things to remember:-

One, since you allow yourself to use eraser to erase any mistakes, it doesn’t mean that your sketches will be better finished. Often your sketches will look dirty, badly bruised and an uneven paper surface if you happily stroke and erase . Limit the use of erase just for recovering and enhancing bright area. Try to stroke right the first time.

Two, smudging with finger. Don’t be happy-smudging too. Smudging with finger often eliminate pencil characteristic although it produce smoother shade. In this sketching I only use finger for the background, shadow area on the table and the side of the cup.

Well, that’s it. Try it out. Use your own set of cup and spoon. Look for a spot in your home where it’s a bit dramatic lighted-up, I’m sure there is one. Get comfortable and start sketching. And if you think your sketch is worth the watch, post it over and share with us!

Do you feel that you do have the talent and need more? Try with a pen. After what you have been through with pencil, this should be easier.

    Have a nice creative day.

    Floria 2010

Went to the Floria Festival 2010 at Putrajaya last Saturday. It was the last day, so most of the flowers were drying and quite some gardens were left unmaintained. Typically, every garden has heliconia or crane flowers or strelitzia or bird of paradise. This was because they were the theme flower for this year. Nonetheless, there were other local flowers as well.

The feeling was not that great compared to the one I attended in KL Lake Garden back in 2008. I kinda like the 2008 one better as the individual gardens were quite big and constructed as if they were there to stay.

    We missed the march band.

    Petronas Gallery Exhibition Launching

Alhamdulillah, an exhibition added to my portfolio. This is my 3rd Group Exhibition, the first being the Magic Mirror Exhibition organised by SCBWI Malaysia and second one The Cat Art Festival organised by ArtMalaysia.

This ongoing exhibition entitled Words+Pictures=Book, Contemporary Malaysian Picture Book Illustration is organised by Petronas Gallery. It offers the Malaysian public an insight into the world of children’s picture book illustration through a fascinating exploration which takes viewers into a dynamic, dreamlike and engaging territory, with 10 uniquely Malaysian tales told in different styles. While promising a visual treat for viewers of all levels, the exhibition also serves to elevate the status of Malaysian picture book illustration to a serious art form and inspire new generation illustrators, in recognition of its role in a burgeoning Malaysian art landscape.

I am so lucky to have Pak Yusof Gajah’s recommendation for this exhibition. I submitted my work through him and lucky again to be chosen to be with other great nine Malaysian illustrators namely Pak Yusof Gajah himself, Azalan Hussein, Shukri Edrus, Jainal Amambing, Awang Fadillah Ali Hussein, Faizal Abdul Jalil, Khairul Azmir Shoib, Nur Azmi Mokhtar and Chong Chin Yew.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Pak Yusof Gajah, Linda T. Lingard not leaving behind my husband and son for their endless supports.

Also big thanks to all of you who takes the time to read my blog and gives me moral support.

Top pictures were taken by my niece’s (Wanda) friends, Hazim and Naufal. Thank you boys for the pictures!  While below is the scanned spread cover for the books I did for Petronas Gallery. Logo was taken from Petronas Gallery’s website. Artworks’ copyright are now all belongs to Petronas Gallery.

    Ikan Bakar Sri Murni

My husband and I suddenly felt like having an ikan bakar and so we went on the Net searching for the nearest place to have one. I remember a place called Cafe Lui as suggested by Dmystify in his blog but then my husband was faster, he found a place in Hulu Langat called Ikan Bakar Sri Murni that serves ikan bakar! The place is situated in the heart of Hulu Langat, not far from the Batu 18 town. The road leading to the place was quite dark and there were not so many people when we reached there. But during our dinner, people started flocking in, mostly groups with big family members. I was amazed that how on earth we didn’t discover this place before.

We had Ikan Siakap Bakar, Sambal Sotong, Kailan Goreng and Telur Dadar; enough for a family of four. Normally it was just the three of us but last month we have a new addition to our family, my niece Wanda.

The grilled fish was fresh from the restaurant’s pond and tasted very sweet. The tamarind sauce was great too. We will definitely come back next month to treat ourselves a fresh grilled fish amidst the lush forest of Hulu Langat. Maybe we’ll make it for lunch so that we can capture photos of the restaurant. Oh yes, and it’s a floating restaurant!

    The address is:
    Ikan Bakar Sri Murni
    Batu 19, Kg Jawa
    Hulu Langat
