Moleskine cum IF challenge
Penang Island | Mixed media on Moleskine
The IF challenge this week is to illustrate ‘Island’. The only thing that I could think of is Penang Island. Of course there’s Langkawi Island, Pangkor Island and what not but Penang Island always comes to mind first. Furthermore, my late grandma was a Penangite. I wish I could add more elements like landmark icons but it would be too small for me to draw, so I just settled with the Penang Bridge intead. Of course Plumerias too.
The last time I went there was like 8 years ago and I really enjoyed it’s beautiful beaches, the view from the bridge and the antique buildings. I even painted one for my wall. My moleskine; 56 pages left. Overall coloring: Acrylic, outline: micron pen, shadow: prismacolor colored pencils.

kak emila…mcmn kak emila guna watercolor or arcrylic kat moleskin, tp warna tu rata n kertas x bergelombang? i use watercolor paper but bila scan x cantik sebab ada bayang2 tekstur.

Thanks Manggis! Kertas moleskine tak setebal kertas watercolor, so what I did was, guna iron! haha! But kalau draw on art paper, i prefer heavier weight of watercolor paper or acrylic matt board.

u mean…mmg kertas tu jadi bergelombang juga? tp kemudian kak emila iron bila dah siap? satu lg masalah sy bila guna kertas biasa, kertas tu sometimes menggelupas bila guna watercolor. ur drawing on moleskin selalu nampak sangat elok…lagi satu…biasanya kak emila scan selalu berapa dpi? hasi scan sy selalu x bagus. x menunjukkan rupa sebenar lukisan. ada tips?

I am a peningnite! Haha.. Though only for 3 years till now (I am a student at a local University there) But I am sure love Penang. Shopping spare is relatively cheap (my friends from KL come here every 2 months just to shop), view is amazing and foremost, the people there is really friendly. I went Penang without knowing anything about their dialect/slang/loghat but I seem to already catch a few phrases by now 😀

Emila you should visit Penang soon and capture on canvas or paper whatever thats left of its beauty. The traffic Jam, the not so clean sea and the rapid development of the Batu Ferringhi Hills are not helping in preserving the order of Nature.
With the Heritage status bestowed upon Penang, hopefully it would bring back the shine to the ‘Pearl of the Orient’.
Your style of illustration should be used in all Tourism Malaysia brouchures, leaflets etc. Its got a distinctive style thats different and original.
With 56 pages left you still got slightly over 100 days to complete your moleskine. Go for it, Emila!

Melukis tu satu hal, idea pulak satu hal yang lain dan anda memang mempunyai kelebihan untuk kedua-dua hal tersebut. Tentang illustrasi, no comment everybody knows you’re great at it, tapi your idea is excellent. Kalau saya terlibat dengan Kemajuan Pelancungan Penang ( or Malaysia), pasti saya akan cuba beli yang ni.
